Regenerating Water Softening System

The Softening cartridge (Part #: FC024) for our garden hose filter is filled with the same resin that’s in a home water softener, and it’s just as effective.  But because of its small size, its lifespan is limited.

To test its endurance, we took a new cartridge and ran our moderately hard (7 grain per gallon) tap water through it and tested it after every ten gallons or so until it stopped softening the water.  On our water, a new cartridge has about a 90 gallon capacity before it begins to “leak” hardness.

The good news, though, is that you can renew it through an easy, inexpensive process, and that it will last virtually forever.

Regenerate and Reuse Cartridge

  1. Buy a bag of standard water softener salt.  It usually costs about $5 for a fifty pound bag.  It’s sold in feed stores, home stores, and large discount stores.
  2. Pour a generous amount of softener salt into a large pan or bucket.  We used a plastic dishpan for our experiment.  Fill the pan with water until it covers the salt.  But don’t overdo it.  You want to make some very salty water.
  3. Put your spent softening cartridge into the pan of salty water and let it sit at least overnight.  (It won’t hurt it to stay there definitely, so you might just store it there between car washes.)
  4. The salty water, brine, will dislodge the calcium (hardness) buildup on the resin and replace it with sodium.  It won’t quite make the resin “as good as new” (not even a commercial water softener does that), but it will recharge the cartridge considerably, and you should be able to reuse it almost indefinitely.

You might consider buying a spare cartridge or two so that one can be recharged while another is in use.

The useful life between regenerations, of course, depends upon the hardness of your water.

Garden Hose Filter Instructions

Each unit includes the following:

  • Garden Hose Adapters (Installed)
  • Mounting Bracket with Screws
  • A Filter Wrench

***(A filter cartridge is not included. It must be ordered separately.)

This unit is designed to insert on the end of a garden hose and to feed into a second garden hose.

  1. Attach a garden hose to a water source.
  2. Attach the end of the hose to the “In” port of the garden hose filter.  Be sure to suse a hose washer.
  3. *Tip:  The easy way is to remove the cap from the filter, screw it onto the hose, load the filter cartridge into the housing, then screw the cap back on.
  4. Attach the second hose to the “Out” port of the filter.
  5. The wrench is to remove the sump from the cap of the housing when changing filter cartridges.
